Where is Jón?
Where is Jón?, a seven-episode true-crime podcast series, is written, reported and produced by Liam O’Brien and Anna Marsibil Clausen. Released in early 2025 as a collaboration between RTÉ (Ireland) and RÚV (Iceland), it investigates the disappearance of Jón Jónsson, an Icelander who journeyed to Dublin in February 2019 for the Dublin Poker Festival. Within 24 hours of arriving, after leaving the Bonnington Hotel, he vanished without a trace.
Over the course of the series, friends, family, law enforcement, and witnesses contribute what they know. The investigation covers Jón’s background, his plans for the trip, movements in Dublin, and the many unanswered questions that followed. The podcast reinvigorated interest the Irish Police in the case. The series is nominated for Prix Europa 2025, one of Europe’s most prestigious media awards.
Musically, I wanted to approach this project with empathy and respect for both Jón and his family, to lift the story without being overly sensational. The score uses layered textures, subtle melodic fragments and clockwork motives that reflect on how the memory of witnesses, and thereby the investigation is affected by the time that has passed. The soundtrack is composed and performed by me with Unnur Jónsdóttir on cello - and released as a soundtrack record on all platforms. Listen below:
