Upphaf live from the theatre

It’s not everyday that I get a chance to write songs, as in real pop songs with words performed by real singers. My work is usually more left of center or soundtrack based. So the opportunity to write a title track for the play Begninning (Icelandic title Upphaf) by David Elridge was a real treat for me. I was joined by one of my favourite singers, Valdimar Guðmundsson, who worked closely with me on the project. We co-wrote the lyrics and I wrote the song.

The track was an immediate success and went to number one in the Icelandic charts. I think that might be my first number one hit. Around the same time the play was premiered and was a huge success. Soon afterwards the theatre had to close due to increased covid-restrictions. It was around that time that we decided to record a live version of the song in a beutiful lounge at the National Theatre. The live version is more down-tempo, and intimate than the original. I don’t know about you, but I love Valdimar’s voice.

The play premiered last September at the National Theatre of Iceland, and will resume in 2021.

Add both versions of Upphaf to your Spotify library.
